Watch and Pray

"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. "Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. "It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. "Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— "lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. "And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!"       Mark 13:32-37 NKJV

Considering the number of rapture predictions that have appeared in the last couple of years, it follows that many are now experiencing some level of disappointment that we as a body of believers are still here on earth. While I certainly can understand that, and share the desire to be with my Father in heaven, my level of disappointment might not be as great as some. Why is that? Simply because I believe my interpretation of “watching” for the Lord's return may differ from that of others.

Many have asked me for my thoughts and opinions on those who attempt to predict a date for the rapture based on their particular brand of scholarship, and their interpretation of certain scriptures. Understand that I have no objection to anyone doing what they feel they are being led by the Lord to do, yet most of those whose work I am familiar with share one thing in common and that is quoting God's commandment to “watch” as one of their reasons for attempting to set a date for His return.  With that in mind, I thought we should look a little closer at our command to watch.

In this passage we find two distinct words for watch. The first is agrypneō, a verb meaning, 1) to be sleepless, keep awake, watch, 2) to be circumspect, attentive, ready. The second is grēgoreō, also a verb meaning, 1) to watch, 2) metaphor. give strict attention to, be cautious, active; a) to take heed lest through remission and indolence some destructive calamity suddenly overtake one.

It may seem to be an obvious conclusion, but if we consider these definitions closely we simply find we are being told to not “sleep” but be awake and watching so we are not taken by surprise when our Lord returns for us. This is, of course, a totally different thing than trying to predict when we think He might appear. Although many might feel trying to figure out when the rapture might occur is a way of watching, I would respectfully suggest that from the definitions we read, it is not.

The question then arises, what are we supposed to do while we wait? Again I believe the answer to that is obvious. A passage in scripture that was written by the Apostle Paul when he was speaking of the rapture, and often used in relation to its timing, is this;

"For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in."
Romans 11:25 NKJV

Many believe, and I tend to agree, that this passage reveals that God has a number in mind in regards to the size of the Church when He decides to call us home. Now if in fact, God has a certain number of believers He is waiting for to become members of the Body before He calls for the rapture of the Church, would it then not follow that our time would be better spent in trying to share the Gospel with an unbelieving world rather than trying to figure out dates? Again, I have no quarrel with those who choose to pursue that path, but I would caution those same brothers and sisters not to make it their priority, but to make evangelism the main focus of their efforts.

It is no wonder we find it difficult to wait upon the Lord considering the vast amount of signs we see occurring around us on a daily basis. The events we have witnessed in the past few years have certainly caused many in the body to take note. Yet that is exactly what is expected of us as believers, so I think it important that we should be looking for some of the reasons God asks this of us. I would like to share just three ideas I have about why we as believers find ourselves in this situation right now; expectant but still waiting.

One: We are being prepared to fully appreciate eternity with our Lord.

"For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,"   2 Corinthians 4:17 NASB

The more we must endure down here increases the joy we will find when we finally experience the glory of life with God in the place He has prepared for us. The longer the wait, the stronger the anticipation and the greater the appreciation.

Two: We are being strengthened with power from above which allows us to complete the tasks He has set for us here.

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew [their] strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; [and] they shall walk, and not faint."   Isaiah 40:31 KJV

We know what is expected of us here on this earth, and it should come as no surprise that the opportunities to share our faith will increase dramatically as the end draws near. In a way, you could say this is our time to shine, and God has promised to give us the strength necessary to succeed.

Three: We are to be living examples of His faithfulness.

"For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations."   Psalms 100:5 KJV

I have three daughters who are grown and living on their own now, and one of the lessons about life that I often have an opportunity to share with them is God's faithfulness. Of course I have to explain to them it's easier for me because I am a little older than they are, but having experienced more examples of God's faithfulness makes it easier to accept whatever situation I find myself in. I simply remind them of the situations in their past when they were in agony about waiting for something, yet God always came through. In these situations God demonstrates His faithfulness to us, and also through us so others can see.

"Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.”

At times, waiting can be painful. I won't deny that and neither will you. I and many others are so ready for Jesus to return, but He isn't here yet and we are being asked to wait a little longer. How long? I have no idea, but it certainly appears to me that the appointment the Church has to be delivered to glory with Him, and the world to tribulation could happen at any time.  There are, however, reasons for making us wait. Look to God for strength, and be busy making the most of the opportunities we have in the short time we have left.

If you have never made the decision to accept the sacrifice Jesus made for you by dying on the cross for your sins, there is no better time than right now to do so.  Simply pray to the Father and ask Him to forgive you for your sins and tell Him you believe that Jesus died for you.  Accept the gift of salvation He has offered you and you too will drink of this cup of along with Jesus on that future day when He will invite all of His believers to join Him. You can do that by praying this prayer and accepting the gift of eternal life God has offered you by the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ.

Father, I know I am a sinner in need of salvation. I believe you sent your Son Jesus to die on the cross for my sin, and I ask you now to forgive me of my sins. I want to receive your gift of salvation so please come into my heart and help me to live and follow you as my Lord and Savior. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Is the Window of Opportunity Closing?

And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.”  Genesis 6:6. NKJV

“And He has made from one blood[ every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,”   Acts 17:26. NKJV

As someone who has spent a great portion of his life teaching on prophecy and the end times as revealed by scripture, I can truthfully say that there has been a significant change these past few years in peoples’ opinion on the nearness of the end of this age.  Truth be told, in my early years of teaching most people had little to no interest in hearing about what God has to say about His return and the importance of watching for the signs of His appearing.  Not only has that position changed dramatically, there is now a significant interest in prophecy and the rapture of the Church which I have never seen before.

Many will recognize this verse above from the book of Genesis where God’s feelings are revealed as He looked at what had become of the world that He had created.  A question I believe we all should be asking at this present time is do you think it is possible God is feeling exactly the same as He did in Noah’s day?  If so, then it should not surprise anyone that the possibility of God’s judgment may well be right on our horizon.

As much as most of us may strongly dislike the times we find ourselves in right now, there is no arguing the fact that opportunities to share the gospel have increased exponentially right along with our troubles.  Yet if so many believe that we are, indeed, living in the end times, it also follows that we must necessarily believe that the Second coming of Jesus is closer than it has ever been.  After all, we have been warned by Jesus Himself that we would know when His return is near if we but simply watch for the signs.

“So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! “Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”  Matthew 24:33-35  NKJV

While there are a great many reasons that I personally believe we have arrived at the time Jesus told us to watch for, I want to share just one of those reasons with you today in the hope that you will be as encouraged as I am.  As always, I want to make it clear that I am not a prophet, nor am I predicting anything to occur, but simply choosing to share something I found which gives me a reason to hope for His soon appearance.

“But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”  2 Peter 3:8  NKJV

In Judaism, there is a belief that God’s plan for this world will mimic the days of creation in that those six days will equate to six thousand years for the completion of His plan, with one day of one thousand years (the seventh day) as a “day” of rest.  Many Jewish rabbis have long said that the Talmud teaches that the Messiah must appear at or before the end of the sixth day, or six thousand year period of time.  Whether or not this is true waits to be proven but it does present us with an interesting question and a very immediate conjecture.

Most Bible teachers I have studied under agree that there were approximately two thousand years from creation to Abraham, and another two thousand years from Abraham to the day that Jesus of Nazareth presented Himself as the long awaited Messiah.  That being said, it follows that there could be another two thousand year period from Jesus’ claim to be the Messiah and His second coming at the end of this age.  In order for us to try and make any sort of calculation based on this equation, however, we need a firm point in which to start and this is where things become complicated.

I believe I am safe in saying that the date of Jesus’ birth and death has been the subject of much debate for the past two thousand years. While the adage “agree to disagree” may be the best way to describe the debate, one thing is perfectly clear, most all of the arguments seem to agree that His birth occurred somewhere between 4BC and 1AD with HIs death and resurrection some 33 years later.  Scholastically speaking, I am probably the last person whose opinion should be considered but for what it is worth I will share my thoughts on the subject and why I believe it might be worthy of our immediate consideration.

If we accept the premise that 1AD was the last possible year for Jesus’ birth, we can then compute a timeline for the end of the sixth day by simply adding two thousand years to the year of His death and resurrection, which would have been in the year 32 AD.  That calculation would then result in the second coming of Christ to this earth to occur sometime in the year 2032.  Of course. In regards to the rapture of the Church promised to those who choose to believe in the sacrifice of His Son, God has revealed we will be taken from this earth before the last seven years of this age which is known as the tribulation.  Subtract 7 years for the tribulation period from the year 2032 and we arrive at 2025 as a start date for that terrible time of trouble.  Somehow I can’t help but think that this is beyond coincidence.  Looking at this equation and looking at the state of the world today one can’t help but believe that our time on this earth is quickly coming to an end.

As I have long believed and subscribed to the “Gap Theory” which teaches that there is a gap of time between the rapture of the Church and the beginning of the tribulation, you can see why I am continually looking up and expecting to hear our call to come home at any time.  Only time will tell if the tribulation will start sometime this year but I think it goes without saying that based on these calculations, if the premise that God indeed has laid out a timeline of seven thousand years for this earth is correct, it would be reasonable to say the window of opportunity is closing very fast indeed.

If you have never made the decision to accept the free gift of eternal life provided by Jesus’ death and resurrection I encourage you to do so today.  Simply ask God to forgive you of your sins based on your belief that Jesus died to pay the price, and turn over control of your life to Him.  You can do that by praying a prayer just like this one;

"Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me. Amen."

Getting Close to the Finale?

“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:”     2 Timothy 3:1. NKJV

“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”  Matthew 24:12. NKJV

I think it fair to say that if there is a better description in the Word of God of the world we live in right now, I am certainly not aware of it.  The Greek word used here for “perilous” is chalepos, which is defined as “troublous, difficult, harsh, fierce, violent.  I can’t help but wonder how many would choose to describe the first two weeks of 2025 in this way?  I have already lost count of the number of times I have seen the word apocalyptic used these past ten days, and truth be told I believe it will prove to be only the beginning.  Why is that?  I think it is becoming obvious that someone has a plan and that plan is unfolding at an increasingly quicker pace.

“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,”  2 Thessalonians 2:8-9  KJV

Desperate times call for desperate measures.  Are you familiar with that saying?  If one were to choose to apply that to the current events we are seeing in this country, as well as around the world, who would you consider to be the one who could rightly be described as desperate?  Who, or should I say what, entity desires nothing more than the overthrow of society as we know it, with the objective being the total control of this world?  I think you have guessed by now that Satan, the evil one who has, since creation, tried to corrupt and control this world, is the one who is behind all the evil we see occurring right now.

Most students of prophecy or even those who only passingly familiar with what the Bible teaches about the tribulation period, a time which many watchers feel is staring us in the face, will recognize the passage above from Thessalonians as referring to the coming world leader, most often called the antichrist.  Yet many miss the one word which helps to explain exactly what we are seeing in the world today, and the reason for the violence which seems to be evolving into an almost daily occurrence.  The word I am referring to is found in verse 9, and it is the word “after”.

You see, we as believers are told, and most are willing to accept, that the individual behind the evil we are seeing today is none other than Satan.  Of course, some might well ask the question why it is all of a sudden increasing to the extent we are seeing with signs of only getting worse and not better. Personally, I see a parallel between what Satan is doing, and what a conductor of a symphony does as he conducts an orchestra.  I have had the opportunity to watch many performances by some of the world’s greatest conductors and it is always amazing to me to watch the intensity build as the conductor leads the orchestra to where he wants them to go, the grand finale.

“For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.”  2 Thessalonians 2:7  NKJV

Did you notice Paul’s comment, “already at work”?  Of course, Satan has been working against our Father since the Garden of Eden, but in the context of the preparation for the appearing of his minion the antichrist, Satan is now creating the conditions which will allow the antichrist to take power as easily as he will.  It seems a simple premise, but many miss the fact that in order for one man to become the world’s “Mr. Fixit”, the world has to be broken.  It’s my opinion that what we are seeing now with such an increase in violence is Satan leading the world to the finale which will usher in the reign of his chosen one.

“All these are the beginning of birth pains.”  Matthew 24:8  NIV

“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.”  Mark 13:8  NIV

When Jesus spoke to his disciples in the garden concerning the point in time that we have so obviously arrived at, He chose to use the example of a woman in labor to illustrate how events would unfold.  Although some might argue that the events Jesus was referring to occur exclusively within the seven year tribulation, I believe the picture we are given is enlightening in the fact that for nine months of a pregnancy it is painfully obvious that a woman is preparing to give birth.  Not only do I believe some of the events Jesus referred to can occur before the beginning of the tribulation, I am certain what we are witnessing today in this world and the dramatic increase in violence is a sign the labor is upon us.

As I watch the world attempt to explain away the increasing level of violence and natural disasters we are witnessing by placing the blame for it on something or someone, or some particular group or organization, my question for you today is rather simple.  Who do you think is behind them?  You see although the world looks for an easy, explainable scapegoat, as believers we understand that the presence of evil in this world lies at the feet of only one source, Satan.  Evil men are simply the tool he uses to accomplish his goals.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”  Jeremiah 17:9  NKJV

I believe that not only the overall upsurge in violence around the world, but even the outright hatred exhibited in our country right now comes from just one source.  Satan is orchestrating the evil we see today and is using it to lead an unbelieving world to the point in time where they will gladly embrace the appearance of Satan’s handpicked world leader who will usher in the period of time which will eventually threaten the very existence of the world we know. Unfortunately for those who choose to embrace this “savior”, rather than bringing the utopia they believe will come, the result will be something much different.  How bad will things get?

“men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”  Luke 21:26  NKJV

“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. “And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.”  Matthew 24:21-22  NKJV

As believers we are told that the violence during tribulation period will be so bad that not only will men die simply from the fear they experience, if God did not intervene and stop the tribulation at seven years every man, woman, and child on earth would die.  This is Satan’s plan for this world, and what we are seeing now is Satan orchestrating events to bring his plan to fruition.  I believe the labor pains are only going to get worse, and according to the Word of God, they will not stop until He comes to put an end to it.  Our responsibility today as the Church, the body of Christ, is to recognize the enemy, resist the enemy, and most of all reveal the enemy.  When an unbelieving world wonders at the violence we are seeing, we as believers are afforded the perfect opportunity to share the hope of our deliverance.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”  Ephesians 6:12  NKJV

Of course, while the deliverance from the evil of this world is available to all, it’s guaranteed only to those who choose to accept it by believing on the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  If you are reading this today and have never made that decision, you can do it right now wherever you might be by simply praying a prayer like this;

Jesus I know that I am a sinner, and have sinned against you.  I believe you loved me enough to send your Son Jesus to die for my sins, and that He rose from the dead so that I can live.  Forgive me of my sins and come into my life and help me to live for you.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”  Romans 10:9-10  NKJV

Kurds in the Way

“The burden against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw. “Lift up a banner on the high mountain, Raise your voice to them; Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles. I have commanded My sanctified ones; I have also called My mighty ones for My anger— Those who rejoice in My exaltation.” The noise of a multitude in the mountains, Like that of many people! A tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts musters The army for battle. They come from a far country, From the end of heaven— The LORD and His weapons of indignation, To destroy the whole land. Wail, for the day of the LORD is at hand! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. Therefore all hands will be limp, Every man’s heart will melt, And they will be afraid. Pangs and sorrows will take hold of them; They will be in pain as a woman in childbirth; They will be amazed at one another; Their faces will be like flames. Behold, the day of the LORD comes, Cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger, To lay the land desolate; And He will destroy its sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not give their light; The sun will be darkened in its going forth, And the moon will not cause its light to shine. “I will punish the world for its evil, And the wicked for their iniquity; I will halt the arrogance of the proud, And will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. I will make a mortal more rare than fine gold, A man more than the golden wedge of Ophir. Therefore I will shake the heavens, And the earth will move out of her place, In the wrath of the LORD of hosts And in the day of His fierce anger. It shall be as the hunted gazelle, And as a sheep that no man takes up; Every man will turn to his own people, And everyone will flee to his own land. Everyone who is found will be thrust through, And everyone who is captured will fall by the sword. Their children also will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered And their wives ravished. “Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, Who will not regard silver; And as for gold, they will not delight in it. Also their bows will dash the young men to pieces, And they will have no pity on the fruit of the womb; Their eye will not spare children. And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It will never be inhabited, Nor will it be settled from generation to generation; Nor will the Arabian pitch tents there, Nor will the shepherds make their sheepfolds there. But wild beasts of the desert will lie there, And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches will dwell there, And wild goats will caper there. The hyenas will howl in their citadels, And jackals in their pleasant palaces. Her time is near to come, And her days will not be prolonged.”  Isaiah 13  NKJV

What I want to share with you today is a subject I have shared before but considering some of the events which have occurred recently in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime, I have chosen to share it with you again. Many of you will recognize this passage from Isaiah as the prophesied destruction of Babylon which we are told about in the Book of Revelation.  Other references to it can be found in Isaiah 14, and Jeremiah 50 and 51.  When speaking on the end times, and speculating on how close we may be to the events in Revelation, a popular quote we often hear is this; “when you see the Christmas decorations going up, you know that Thanksgiving is near”.  So too, we can recognize the signs of the nearness of the rapture by the preparations going on all around us for the events we are told will occur during the tribulation.

Over time I have found that there are many things taking place that at first glance are so small that they somehow escape notice.  One of those might well be found in this passage from Isaiah, and we could do well to consider it in regards to current events.  I am speaking of the mention towards the end of the passage of the group of people called the Medes which are described as having “no pity” as God uses them to implement His judgment on Babylon.  So how can it be that Isaiah tells us that they are present during the tribulation when they no longer exist today?  Or do they?  While the news this past week focused almost entirely upon the attack on US forces in the Middle East and our response to it, other events occurred which may have an even greater significance.

Kurds to Netanyahu and Trump: The clock is ticking                 https://worldisraelnews.com/kurds-to-netanyahu-and-trump-the-clock-is-ticking/

In the region of the Middle East where the countries of Iran, Iraq, and Turkey co-join, there is a relatively small group of people known as the Kurds.  These people number approximately ten million or so, and at present find themselves in much the same position as Israel was before 1948 in that they have no country of their own and desperately desire one.  Also, much like the Jews, they have been persecuted in every country in which they have tried to live.  Yet unlike the Jews, the vast majority of Kurds are Muslim, which begs the question; why are they being persecuted in the Muslim part of the world?

In fact, it appears that the Kurds are descended from the ancient Medes, who at one time partnered with the Persians to form the Medo-Persian Empire, which was revealed by Daniel to be the second of the four great empires which were to rule that part of the world.  Cyrus the Great, whom we meet during Daniels’ time, was part Mede and part Persian.  He captured the city of Ecbatana (the modern day city of Hamadan in Iran) which was the capital of Media, and created the greatest empire to rule in the sixth century before Christ.

Eventually Alexander the Great arrived on the scene and defeated them as part of his campaign to conquer the known world at that time, and slowly the Medes disappear from the annals of history.  Yet many of today’s Kurds believe they are descended from the ancient Medes, and although there is some disagreement among scholars as to the validity of this claim, the important point is that God tells us they will exist at the time of Revelation.  The obvious conclusion then is that they are alive and well today, and considering the venom of their revenge on Babylon, they must believe they have a serious ax to grind.

As I have studied this prophecy, that is essentially the conclusion I eventually arrived at; it is revenge which motivates these people to destroy Babylon in the way that they do.  The Kurds of today wish desperately for a homeland they can call their own, but neither Iran, Iraq, Syria, Russia nor Turkey will allow that to happen.  You see, in order to do so the land would have to come from one or all of these countries and none of them is willing to allow that to happen.  So the situation as it exists today is that there are ten million ethnic people descended from the ancient Medes who desperately wish to have a land they can call their own.  However, not only is that dream being denied, they are under the threat of extinction because of the hatred of the countries surrounding them.

You could make the point that the total destruction of Babylon during the tribulation period is one of the most significant events to occur in those seven years.  The book of Revelation tells us that this city will be Satan’s capitol on earth and the center of the anti-Christ’s power.  Although its destruction is at the hands of many nations, only the Medes are mentioned by name.  I believe that this is God’s way of telling us that this is personal for them.  It is a logical assumption that revenge is a very good motivation for the total lack of compassion and extent of destruction which this passage describes as not being seen on this earth since God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

The Kurdish army goes by the name Peshmerga, a term you will often find in the news today.  They are excellent, determined fighters as opposed to many other so called armies in that region and would fight to the death for their country.  They have a history of fighting as professional soldiers and mercenaries, and a reputation as the fiercest fighting force in that part of the world.  Are the seeds of their desire for revenge being sown right before our eyes?  Will the persecution they are receiving from the surrounding countries provoke their desire to strike out at the center of the anti-Christ’s power during the tribulation?  According to Isaiah it will, and if God said it, I believe it.

To me, the simple fact that the Kurds are being mentioned more and more in the news suggests God is putting all the pieces in place in preparation for His coming time of judgment. The treatment of these people can certainly explain their motivation for what the Bible says is about to happen.  Since He has promised to remove believers before this judgment takes place by way of the rapture of the Church, now more than ever the decision to be included in that event is the most important one you could ever make. If you have never taken the step of accepting His gift of eternal life, I urge you to do it right now.  Simply pray a prayer like this one and confess to God your need for salvation, and accept the gift He provided for you by the death and resurrection of His own Son, Jesus Christ.

Jesus I know I am a sinner. I have sinned against you, but I know you loved me enough to send your Son, Jesus Christ to die for my sins and then rise from the dead so that I may live forever with You. Lord forgive me of my sins and come into my life and help me to begin to live for You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
